It’s been so long since I’ve written here! After tying the knot, life and work got crazy busy, so I’ve been putting this on the back burner. However, after planning a cozy hygge themed date night for my husband and I the other day, I knew I had to share it with the world!
Whether you’re still in the planning phases of your wedding, or you’ve been married a few years now, date nights are important to keeping the romance alive. I’ll be honest, I thought the idea of a specified date night for newlyweds at first seemed a little silly – after all, you live in the same place and eat meals together already, right? Isn’t that enough?
Well, not always. My husband and I tend to both be pretty busy with work, and so finding time together to just decompress and enjoy each other’s company actually proved to be a little more difficult that we thought it would be. So, we started instituting a date night, where we actually plan time together to enjoy a meal and an activity.
When it’s my turn to plan our special night, I find that choosing a date night theme tends to make things 1) more fun for me to plan, and 2) seem more special. So, I’ve got a short list going of date night themes that I’ve really enjoyed. This Hygge inspired cosy date night is hands down my favorite so far, and I definitely predict more of these dates in my future.
First, we’ll quickly address what exactly hygge is. It’s definitely been trending for a little while now, in part due to Meik Wiking’s charming book, The Little Book of Hygge. The Danish routinely end up at the top of the World Happiness Index (along with their Scandinavian brethren in Norway and Sweden), which the author Meik Wiking (who is conveniently, the CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen) attributes this in part to the Danish dedication to the concept of hygge.
Hygge (pronounced in sort of like hoo-gah, in the elegant Danish tongue) encompasses the idea of coziness and warmth and closeness all rolled together. It’s that feeling you get while curled up in a thick blanket in front of the fireplace on a stormy night, or the warmth you sense having dinner with a few of your closest friends. I devoured The Little Book of Hygge in a weekend and soon realized that this idea was my spirit animal.
So, how do you translate hygge into a date night? Allow we to elaborate!
Hygge Date Night Location
Right off the bat, I should mention that this date night is designed to be a night in, enjoying your home. Yes, nights out on the town can be a blast, but to truly feel close and cozy and intimate, I definitely recommend cuddling up on the couch. Bonus points if you have a wood stove or fireplace.
Set the mood by finding some nice candles and lighting a few here and there. Dim the lights, and grab a few blankets and pillows to create a super comfy snuggle spot.
Cozy Date Night Attire
It can be fun to dress up all fancy for a date with your partner or spouse, but comfort rules with hygge. Put on a pair of thick warm socks, grab a cozy sweater, say yes to wearing leggings as pants or grab your favorite flannel. It may not be the sexiest outfit, but some dates are just about having a good time with your partner and getting comfortable together.
Hygge Date Night Activities
Put down the remote control and get in some face time with your partner. Playing a game -in a wonderfully fun bonding experience that promotes that sense of warmth and togetherness. These printable hygge inspired date night questions. Are the perfect addition to your cosy Scandinavian theme.
You could also find a deck of playing cards (you know you’ve got one lying around somewhere), and play a good old fashioned game of go fish, or any of these 35 games listed here.
Cosy Food and Drink
Fondue is the first food that comes to mind when I think of a cozy fireside date, but pretty much anything in that same vein will do. A cheese board or antipasti platter also make a delicious and cozy meal, and half the fun can be going to the store together to pick everything out.
Sweets and pastries are the typical hygge treats, so feel free to indulge in some baked goods or nice chocolates as well.
As for drinks, this is really a matter of preference. If a bottle of wine or champagne says cozy to you, then go for it. Similarly, if you’ve got a fully stocked bar, maybe mixed drinks sound a little more intimate. Even still, you may just skip the booze altogether to whip up some warm hot chocolate to enjoy with dessert.
Make It Yours
Whatever you decide to do for your hygge inspired date night, remember it’s all about having a relaxing and cozy good time with your partner. This is a nice excuse to spend time together without feeling like you have to get dressed up or go out to a fancy dinner. You can stay in, get comfy, light some candles, grab your favorite blankets, play card games and eat delicious food, all in the name of building your relationship.
